Modes of Variability

Climate variability and change are characterized in underlying space-time structure with perferred spatial patterns and temporal variations. Thus, a mode of variability is often considered to be the product of a spatial climate pattern and an associated index time series.

The most well-known large-scale modes of variability are the El Nino Southern Oscillation (ENSO) and the North Atlantic Oscillation.
